Pedestrian Accidents
According to a 2007 report released by the
National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian
accidents killed more than 4,600 people in the United
States and injured about 70,000 more. These accidents
are caused by drivers who may be fatigued, distracted
or operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs
or alcohol. Since pedestrians travel without the protection
of seat belts, airbags, or helmets, their injuries can
be serious and catastrophic. They are often treated
for horrible injuries to their head, neck and spinal
cord. These traumatic injuries can result in permanent
disabilities or even death.
Injured pedestrians typically incur expenses related
to the accident such as medical treatment, rehabilitation,
medication, or lost income due to their inability to
work. They may also lose the ability to perform various
activities of normal daily living, in both the short
and long term, and may endure pain and suffering as
a result of the accident. These victims may be able
to bring a claim against the driver and/or owner of
the vehicle that struck them.
If you have been in a pedestrian accident, it is
vital that you do not talk to any insurance investigator,
sign any papers, or accept a settlement before talking
to an accident lawyer. Many injuries have long-term
consequences that simply are not accounted for by insurance
companies. Insurance companies have a team of adjusters,
investigators and attorneys whose goal is to minimize
the amount of money they pay to accident victims.
Therefore, it is important for you
to seek the advice of a lawyer in order to protect your
right to fair compensation.
